Definition
The mid-market closing yield, in percent, of the Government of Canada bond that the Bank of Canada selects as its long-term benchmark. The Bank selects bond issues "that mature approximately in the indicated terms".
Source
Bank of Canada, Valet series BD.CDN.LONG.DQ.YLD ("Benchmark bond yield, long-term"), part of the Bank's selected benchmark bond yields. The Bank credits CanDeal Data and Analytics (CanDeal DNA) and the Bank of Canada as sources.
Calculation
Published as is by the source. Sphera Credit does not transform the values.
Publication and dating
One value per business day, dated by the trading day. Sphera Credit refreshes from the Bank of Canada at most every hour.
Caveats
- The bond behind the series changes over time, and a change can move the series on that day without any change in market rates. The long-term bond, which the Bank's notes call the 30-year issue, is "generally changed when a building benchmark bond is adopted by financial markets as a benchmark, typically after the last auction for that bond". The Bank lists the current bonds and the date each took effect on its Selected bond yields page.
- The bond used is not necessarily the one whose remaining time to maturity is closest to the term, and the values may differ from other sources.

If you cannot browse the web, continue without it. I came from the page of the series Long-term Government of Canada yield (series id: goc-long). Once you are connected, start with this series. Then follow these steps: 1. If you can add MCP servers yourself, add this one now. Tell me what you change. - Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http sphera-data https://data.spheracredit.com/mcp - Codex: codex mcp add sphera-data --url https://data.spheracredit.com/mcp - Any other tool: use your own way to add a remote HTTP MCP server with the URL above. 2. If you cannot add it yourself, tell me how to add it in this app, one numbered step at a time, with the exact URL above. If you are not sure of the steps for this app, use the steps on the page above. Do not guess a different URL. 3. The first time you pull a rate history, a sign-in page opens. I sign in myself on that page. Do not enter my details or the emailed code for me. 4. When it is connected, call list_series to check that it works. Then tell me in two or three sentences what you can now do for me. Always give the source and the date of each value you quote.
Then ask: “Chart goc-long since 2024 and explain how it is calculated.”
